Facts and Resources for Mainstream Teachers

Increasing numbers of children who are deaf and hard of hearing are entering regular schools with hearing children, resulting in the need to educate more mainstream classroom teachers about childhood deafness.

This “Did You Know ... ?” series of documents was jointly prepared by staff at
CID, St. Joseph Institute for the Deaf, Moog Center for Deaf Education, Missouri School for the Deaf, Washington University and Missouri State University at the request of Heidi Atkins Leiberman, assistant commissioner of the Division of Special Education, Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (MODESE). Its purpose is to introduce Missouri public school educators to childhood deafness and to help them understand communication and educational issues relevant to children who are deaf and hard of hearing who use hearing aids and cochlear implants.
