ST. LOUIS, Missouri, April 2006 – Central Institute for the Deaf (CID) primary-middle school students Brittany Brunetta, 12, of Glen Carbon, Illinois, and Akash Sookun, 12, of St. Louis were honored by the West St. Louis Chapter of the Optimist Club as 2006 CID Optimist Club Students of the Year. The Optimist Club Student of the Year program recognizes students who represent the ideals of the organization.

At a special breakfast held in their honor, Brittany and Akash each gave a brief talk and received a trophy for having a positive attitude and overcoming barriers to achievement. Both children are profoundly deaf and will graduate from CID in May.

The Optimist Club West has recognized deserving CID school students every year since 1988.
