The
CID Pre-K
Children ages 3 to 5 learn and have fun in the CID pre-k,
where the teacher to student ratio is better than 1 to 4. Children receive
speech, language and auditory education from an experienced teacher of the
deaf in groups of two or three children. The children are ability-grouped
and rotate between the classroom and a discovery room. All
pre-k students enjoy daily creative movement, music, play
time, nap time and frequent special learning events.
Conversational language groups with hearing children focus on natural language
and pragmatics, with the hearing children serving as models for language
and social interaction. The hearing-impaired children benefit by exposure to
more natural communication skills and coping strategies, and it helps them
develop self-esteem and confidence. The hearing children benefit from a
highly trained staff, a language-rich environment, a low student-teacher
ratio and the opportunity to interact with peers who have diverse needs.
An early childhood specialist and her teacher aide work with larger groups
of up to 10 children in the colorful, child-friendly discovery room,
providing a
dynamic program
that makes use of state-of-the-art mainstream
educational techniques. The CID pre-k program emphasizes emerging literacy, pre-academics, social
and physical development and includes a busy schedule of creative activities
centered around phonemic awareness, alphabet knowledge and print awareness.
Teachers are supervised by a department coordinator who is an experienced,
master teacher with many years experience teaching deaf children to talk. |
